Pale lime plaster crossed by soft shadows.
1/1 Lime plaster and granite, chosen for the way they hold the light.

A room cut into the rock below a garden, with a single opening in the roof.

The garden above is unchanged: a moss lawn, three maples, a stone path. The only sign of the room is a narrow slot of glass in the moss.

Inside, there is no other window and no artificial light during the day. The band of sun that enters through the slot moves across the stone and marks the hours: a clock without numbers.

The surface

The ceiling is lime plaster, the walls rough-cut granite, the floor the same granite honed smooth. Every surface is chosen for the way it holds the light, not for the way it looks under a lamp.

Section through the room

Section through the Water Room: a stone room below a garden, lit by a single slot in the roof. Garden Slot Room Stair
Section. The room sits under 40 cm of soil; the slot runs east–west, so the band of light sweeps across the room once a day.

Light

The slot is 30 cm wide and runs the full length of the room. Its position was found with a cardboard model on the site, over three days in June and December.

Garden

The garden was lifted, the room built, and the moss and maples replanted in the same places. Visitors arrive by a stair hidden behind a hedge.

Use

A room for one or two people to sit in silence. There is a stone bench along the north wall and nothing else.
